For the screenplay re-write we did, I chose my personal favorite film, “The Thing”, and I ended up writing 4 pages since the first one was basically just the intro to the screenplay and that felt lame to not actually get into the movie. I was surprised to see all the characters as the first things listed in this screenplay, with all sorts of descriptions of who they are and what their general personality is like. Something odd I noticed though is that for one of the characters, an old dog handler in the movie with a beard and everything, is said to be only 22 in the screenplay. Clearly, they had a different idea in mind at the beginning of this before switching to the older, more isolationist type character. Something else that intrigued me was the interesting formatting of the screenplay. In earlier screenplays we have looked at up to this point, it usually starts with a description of the setting, not the characters. I have a feeling this has a direct correlation to the theme and idea of the movie itself and was made this way on purpose to emphasize the characters more. I do have to comment on the app, Celtix, though. I had a lot of difficulty trying to find a way to get my text to be in the middle of the page as it is written on the original screenplay, but other than that, it was pretty smooth and easy to use. Also just getting to see how the beginning was supposed to look like and knowing how the rest of it goes is so interesting.
